We often see skincare as a losing battle. We fight the good fight, spend our time in front of the mirror, and do everything we can. But there’s always that aching feeling that it’s not enough.

Eventually, our cheeks will sag, jowls will form, and lines will spread across our faces like rivers on a map. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Many patients maintain fresh, youthful-looking skin well into their 60s and on.

How do they do it?

They inform themselves. They learn what works best for them. They develop a routine, and they stick with it. That routine might include skincare products, balms, lotions, cleansers, and creams–and more often than we realize, it may also include Botox and dermal filler.

Preventative medicine and rejuvenation.

With anti-aging injectables, we can prevent lines from forming, slow the process down, and if necessary, restore our youthful aesthetic.

These injectables come in two different categories: neuromodulators, like Botox, and dermal fillers, like Juvederm, Restylane, and Sculptra. They’re similar in that they’re both designed to address wrinkles and lines, but there are some key differences between them.

What is Botox?

Botox is a household name. It’s the face of rejuvenation because the results speak for themselves.

It works by blocking the nerve signals that tell muscles to contract. When a muscle has spent years contracting, it creates grooves where the skin gets caught. That is how certain types of wrinkles are formed.

Blocking those signals can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines and prevent grooves from cropping up, giving the skin a head start in the fight against aging.

If patients use Botox early enough, they can ensure that they appear younger in the long term. It’s a modern fountain of youth.

What is Dermal Filler?

The term “dermal filler” refers to a larger class of anti-aging injectables. There are many brands available on the market, and they each represent a line of products. The following is a short list of them below:

Most fillers use hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring chemical found in the human body. HA attracts moisture and volumizes the area beneath the upper layers of skin.

Dermal fillers focus on volume because it’s something that we tend to lose as we get older. The natural scaffolding that uplifts the skin collapses, and the fat and bone that hold up the structure of the face diminish, resulting in the characteristic signs of aging.

Filler is truly unique because it offers the opportunity to sculpt the face. As dermal filler providers in Nashville, TN, we view ourselves as artists, utilizing principles akin to sculptors and painters. Through our expertise, we enhance cheekbones, augment the chin, and define the jawline, among other features. The possibilities are endless, each capable of fundamentally transforming a patient’s appearance.

The Right Choice: Botox or Dermal Filler

So which is it? Dermal filler or Botox? Which is the best option? Honestly, it depends on two things: The patient’s aesthetic concerns–whether they would like to address volume loss or wrinkles–and the nature of those concerns.

Botox is more suitable for dynamic wrinkles. These are wrinkles that are formed from muscle contraction. They include the following:

  • Crow’s Feet
  • Frown Lines
  • Forehead Lines
  • Smile Lines

Dermal filler works best with static lines. These are wrinkles that stick and get worse as we grow older. They include the following:

  • Nasolabial Folds
  • Tear Trough Lines
  • Marionette Lines
  • Later Cheek Lines

The cheek, lips, and brow are most affected by volume loss. Botox can’t enhance these areas, so if you’re starting to lose fat and bone in these regions, it would be best to try dermal filler.
