In recent years botox has become a popular go to non-surgical treatment to help reduce the appearance of any wrinkles and fine lines. The treatment works in a way so that it temporality paralyses certain muscles in the face which helps to smoothen out the skin.

Although botox treatment is considered safe and effective, it's important to understand the steps to take after any treatment has taken place to reduce the possibility of any adverse effects.

In this blog post we’ll discuss some of the common mistakes that patients make after a botox injection procedure and what steps you can take to avoid them!

Do not Rub or Massage Treated Areas

One big mistake patients make straight after receiving botox treatment is rubbing or massaging the treated area. This can cause the botox around the treated area to move from its intended place, possibly leading to uneven results. You should avoid touching the area for at least 24 hours after receiving botox injections.

Avoid Vigorous Exercise

Exercising a short time after your botox injections can cause an increase in blood flow which can possibly lead to the botox being metabolised faster than it should. This can result in the treatment wearing off much faster than expected. It is always best to avoid any type of vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours.

Don’t Lie Down for Extended Periods

Avoid lying down immediately after your botox injections as again this can cause the botox to shift from its intended location. Try to stay upright and avoid sleeping on your face for at least 4 hours after the initial treatment

Avoid all Alcohol

The consumption of alcohol after receiving botox injections can increase the risk of bruising and swelling around the treated areas. It’s best to avoid any alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours after the treatment.

Do not take any blood thinner medication

Blood thinners include medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen can cause the risk of bruising and bleeding after botox injection treatment. It is best to avoid these medications for at least 24 hours before and after the treatment. If pain relief is required, discuss this with a medical professional such as your doctor about possible alternative options.

Avoid Skin Products with Active Ingredients

Try to avoid any products that can contain active ingredients, such as retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids. These types of products can cause possible skin irritation and increase the risk of bruising around the treated botox area. Again as always try to avoid these products for at least 24 hours after the treatment has taken place.

Delay any other facial or laser treatments

If botox treatment has taken place, avoid any further treatments such as facials or laser treatments for at least 24 hours. Similar to skin products being used, any other treatment has the potential to cause skin irritations and further risk of complications after the injections.

Don’t over do it

Although botox is a great treatment to help improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, it’s important not to overdo it. Often too much botox can lead to a frozen or unnatural appearance. When first beginning your treatment with us it’s always best to start with a conservative amount and add more when needed. Talk to our qualified aestheticians about the best approach for your individual needs.

At the same time if you are starting off with conservative amounts, do not skip any follow up appointments you may have booked after the first treatment as that may result in the botox wearing off sooner than expected and the wrinkles and fine lines starting to appear again. Again discuss your treatment plan first with our aestheticians at The SKN Bar.

Conclusion

To summarise, botox injections can provide a safe and effective way in reducing wrinkles and fine lines. However, it's important to take care of yourself after the treatment and avoid the mistakes outlined in this blog post.
