We’ve all been there. You see all these pictures of people undergoing lip surgery, and they inspire you to make a similar change in yourself, but there’s only one problem – you hate the idea of undergoing surgery and want to avoid it at all costs. If this sounds like you, don’t panic – Nashville has alternative options!

Lip enhancement procedures have risen in popularity in recent years, but there are two treatments that seem to reign supreme in the fight against thin lips – Botox and Hyaluronic Acid. Both achieve similar results, but they do so in entirely different ways. Let’s take a closer look at how they work their magic:

  • Botox: a neurotoxin (Botulinum toxin) helps to relax certain muscles in the face, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA): a natural substance produced by the body that acts as a cushion and lubricant for joints and other tissues.

One treatment, the lip flip, is powered by Botox and works from the outside looking in – Botox is injected into the muscles around the lip. The other treatment, lip filler, is powered by Hyaluronic Acid and works from the inside out – HA is injected directly into the lip. We’ll cover each treatment in more detail below.

Lip Flip: Who Knew Botox Could Be So Versatile?

We’ve all heard of Botox before, but we’ve never really seen it done like this before! A lip flip is one of the most popular non-surgical lip enhancement procedures today. It’s a relatively new concept that started rising in popularity in 2017 and has only grown more popular ever since – today, everyone asks about it!

Here’s what you can expect during a lip flip procedure

  • You’ll meet with your practitioner for an initial consultation
  • Numbing agents aren’t usually applied, but can be requested
  • A thin needle is used to inject Botox into your upper lip and the corners of your mouth
  • You’ll wait around 10-15 minutes to make sure you don’t experience any side effects
  • Your injection specialist will give you a list of aftercare instructions to follow carefully

The lip flip procedure will only take 10-20 minutes from start to finish. There’s no downtime, it produces a natural look, most swelling subsides after the first 24 hours, the neuromodulator starts to settle after a few days, and you’ll start to notice real results within the first week. Your lips will start plumping up in no time.

Lip Filler: All Your Lips Need Is a Touch of Hyaluronic Acid

Lip filler is a type of dermal filler that generally contains hyaluronic acid (HA) – while dermal fillers date back to the 1800s, it was only in the past few decades that we started using HA as a filler and even more recently that we began to use HA in the lips. Thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner, it’s everywhere now!

Here’s what you can expect during a lip filler procedure

  • You’ll meet with your practitioner for an initial consultation
  • A topical anesthetic is applied to the lips (a numbing agent)
  • The nurse injects hyaluronic acid into the lips using a thin needle
  • Your nurse might ice or massage your lips during and after the procedure
  • Your injection specialist will give you a list of aftercare instructions to follow carefully
  • You’ll meet with your nurse practitioner after two weeks for a follow-up appointment

The lip filler procedure can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours per session – it all depends on the patient’s needs and desired look. It produces a drastic change in lip appearance, most swelling will subside after the first week, and it might take 4-6 weeks for the filler to settle in and fully work its magic.

Botox vs. HA: Who Wins This Lip Enhancement Kiss-Off?

It’s settled – you want fuller lips, and you want them now. The question that remains is what procedure are you more interested in – lip filler or a lip flip? That answer generally boils down to personal preference – it’s different for everyone – but your skincare specialist can help you navigate the options available.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing between a lip flip and a lip filler:

  • Lip filler produces a more drastic change, while a lip flip is more minimal (but still noticeable).
  • Lip flips are usually much more affordable than lip fillers.
  • Both are minimally invasive procedures, but lip fillers take longer to heal and take effect.
  • Lip flips only take about 10-20 minutes, while lip filler can take up to 2 hours in some cases.
  • A lip flip produces a more natural look, while lip filler can be slightly more extreme.

Botox and HA can both be used to increase the volume and enhance the shape of your lips, but the similarities often end there. At the end of the day, lip flips are a safe alternative for those who want a more minimal change in appearance, while lip fillers are best reserved for those who want a drastic change.
